What is your morning routine?

My day usually starts by waking up between 7:00-7:15 am. I’m by no means a morning person, so it usually takes me a few minutes to get out of bed. Then, I make myself my morning smoothie and afterwards I’ll enjoy a cup of either Mr. Espresso or Starbucks coffee (black).

During this time I’ll spend at least ten minutes in prayer, and a few more minutes reading.

How long have you stuck with this routine so far?

This has been my routine on and off for the past three years.

How has your morning routine changed over recent years?

Three years ago I was still in grad school; so my morning routine changed every semester, and last year I was living in a different country each month so I had to accommodate my schedule depending on where I was living.

Now I have a more set schedule.

What time do you go to sleep?

Anywhere between 10:45-12:00am.

Do you use an alarm to wake you up in the morning, and if so do you ever hit the snooze button?

Yes. I use the Sleep Cycle app on my iPhone and I often hit snooze once or twice.

How soon after waking up do you have breakfast, and what do you typically have?

I usually eat about thirty minutes after I wake up; smoothies are my absolute favorite! They are so filling, delicious, and packed full of nutrients! If I’m really in a hurry some dried fruit and nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans) are a good alternative.

Do you have a morning workout routine?

I usually do 20-30 minutes of hula hooping! (wow, I salute you— ed.)

Do you see to email first thing in the morning or leave it until later in the day?

I try not to check my email until I’ve been awake for at least thirty minutes…but that doesn’t always happen.

What and when is your first drink in the morning?

I always try to start with at least one glass of water since most people are at least a little dehydrated when they wake up in the morning. This is usually within ten minutes of waking up and getting out of bed.

Soon after, I have a cup of coffee.

On days you’re not settled in your home, are you able to adapt your routine to fit in with a different environment?

Yes, absolutely!

I think that keeping parts of a routine is a great way to feel more at home wherever you go. Typically, I can still have a glass of water, a cup of coffee, a healthy breakfast, and some time for prayer regardless of where I am! Although I also enjoy adding in bits and pieces of local culture as well.

What do you do if you fail to follow your routine, and how does this influence the rest of your day?

I think that habit and routine are really key for me. My morning sets the tone and standard for the rest of the day so it’s important that I start the day excited, focused, and at peace. I can always tell when I mess with my routine because it makes it hard for me to focus the rest of the day.
